Brewery Information:

Herkenrode Abbey beers are a modern revival of a deeply historic Belgian brewing tradition rooted in the former Cistercian nunnery of Herkenrode Abbey in eastern Flanders, which dates back to the 12th century. The nuns there originally brewed beer on-site until they were displaced due to the wars of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but the spirit of those recipes and techniques has endured. Relaunched by the Cornelissen craft family brewery in the early 2000s, the Herkenrode line is officially recognized as Belgian abbey beers (of which there are only 23) and is notable for being tied to an all-female monastic heritage.

Brouwerij Cornelissen, the family-owned and operated brewery, was founded in 1859 in Limburg, Belgium. Cornelissen produces the Herkenrode beers on behalf of the abbey using recipes and inspiration that trace back centuries, combining historical authenticity with modern brewing precision. The brewery is known for maintaining traditional methods, including the use of copper kettles and extended maturation times—up to eight weeks for the Herkenrode range—which contribute to depth of flavor and refinement. This partnership allows the brand to preserve its monastic identity while ensuring consistent quality, making Herkenrode a compelling example of how heritage and contemporary brewing can coexist.
